Watermelon "Volzhanin" - Citrullus lanatus.
Large-fruited, unpretentious variety for growing in the temperate zone and southern regions.
Ripens early, 80-90 days after emergence. With good care, fertilizing with manure and timely watering, the wide-elliptical fruits reach a weight of 18 kg (!).
To obtain such giants, it is important to normalize the number of ovaries on the bush, leaving no more than 3-4 pieces. In cool and rainy summers, when grown in open ground, the average fruit weight is 4-6 kg.
The plant is climbing, with a long main vine. The bark is medium thick, light green, with a pattern of dark green spiny stripes. The pulp is sugary, bright red, juicy.
To make watermelons even sweeter during the period of fruit ripening, it is recommended to reduce watering until harvesting. The variety is resistant to drought and low temperatures.
Sowing of seedlings is carried out at the end of April. Planting of seedlings - at the end of May - beginning of June. The plants are tied to a trellis, all side shoots are removed to a height of 50 cm, and subsequent shoots are pinched over 1-3 leaves.
It is possible to grow in a free culture spread out. Planting pattern: 70x150 cm.
